Popcorn and Acoustic Removal Procedures- The Basics

Acoustic ceiling, sometimes called "popcorn ceiling", is a term used for a spray-on acoustic treatment often used in residential construction in the 1960's and 1970's.

Acoustic ceiling has a cottage cheese texture that helped eliminate reflected sound and echoes. The health risks of asbestos became an issue in the late seventies and eventually was banned for home use in 1989. This affected popcorn ceilings as some of them contained asbestos.

    How To Remove Popcorn Ceiling

    Step One: Prepare The Area

Remove all furniture from the room where you will be removing the popcorn ceiling. Cover the flooring with the industrial grade plastic. And, VERY IMPORTANT", turn off the electricity since you will be using water to help with the ceiling removal. You will also want to put down some Rosin Paper on top of the plastic to absorb the water and make the area less slippery to work on.

    Step Two: Popcorn Ceiling Removal

Working in a small 4' x 4' area at a time, use a garden hose and sprayer to wet down the ceiling. Be sure to wet it thoroughly but don't over wet it. Use a dull scraper to remove the popcorn ceiling. Be careful not to damage the wallboard underneath.

Please note, that if your texture has been painted, you can not wet it as it will not absorb the water. In this case, it is always advisable to hire an expert.

    Step Three: Finish

After you have removed all the popcorn ceiling, let the ceiling dry and then apply a primer to the wallboard. Then you can apply a final coat of paint.
